Become an
OEM eNGINEERING Apprentice

To become an apprentice in Ireland you must be hired by an employer. Apprenticeship employers are formally approved by SOLAS in advance of employing apprentices. Apprentices get a formal contract of employment as part of their apprenticeship.

To find an apprenticeship, you can search apprenticeship vacancies on the Apprenticeship Jobs Portal. You can search for vacancies by location and by apprenticeship. Your local Education and Training Board may hold details of employers seeking to employ an apprentice. This apprenticeship is managed by Cavan and Monaghan ETB (CM ETB). Please note: To become an OEM engineering apprentice you must pass the Ishihara Colour Vision Test (24 Plate Edition). For further information, contact your local Education and Training Board.

Main Aims

The OEM Engineering Apprenticeship has two main aims:

  • To provide trained OEM Engineering Technicians, thereby bridging the skills gap for the OEM Industry.
  • To offer credible career paths and progression routes for these apprentices.

  • To develop levels of self‐awareness in their problem‐solving, critical‐thinking and communication skills linking their classroom learning with the challenges they face in the OEM industry.
  • To equip apprentices with the knowledge and skills required for progression in further education and/or specialist areas in the OEM industry.
  • To increase the apprentices personal and academic confidence through regular feedback and thus continuous improvement in a varied learning environment, thereby paving the way for lifelong learning.

SkillS

  • Assemble, install, test, commission and electronically control engine driven systems.
  • Assemble equipment using testing procedures, interpretation of technical drawings, schematics, data and relevant OEM standards in a manufacturing environment.
  • Install, use, test and troubleshoot hydraulic, electro-mechanical, pneumatic, electrical wiring and automated control systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Interpret technical data and use calibration, torqueing, and testing instruments for effective product assembly, fault diagnosis and rectification.
  • Provide support to customers around the use and maintenance of the products you manufacture.
  • Diagnose faults and rectify them within OEM products across engine driven systems, electrical wiring systems, battery powered systems, hydraulics systems, pneumatic systems and control systems.
