Local TY Students visit Monaghan Institute as part of their ‘STEPS- Engineering Your Future’ programme with Combilift.
STEPS Engineering Your Future (STEPS EYF) coordinated by Engineers Ireland, is an engineering experience that gives transition year students a hands-on, fun and practical insight into engineering at third level and as a career through industry partners.
Nine local TY Students completed the programme over three days with Combilift and represented four secondary schools in the Cavan and Monaghan area, namely, Largy College Clones, Coláiste Oiriall Monaghan, Our Lady’s Castleblayney and St Patrick’s Cavan.
During their three days with Combilift, the group got to experience the “Life of an Engineer” in a fast-paced working environment, giving them an insight into work as future Engineers/Technicians. The group of TY students learnt about the various manufacturing and Engineering Processes and about the wide range of opportunities Combilift has to offer. During the event, the students also received a tour of Combilift’s state of the art manufacturing site, participated in hands-on workshops, live demonstrations and concluded their visit with a Combilift Quiz. Students also listened to “A Day in the Life” of some current Combilift Apprentices, Trainees and Engineers. These talks entailed why they chose a career in Engineering and what they enjoy most about working in Combilift.
Furthermore, on Tuesday morning the group had the opportunity to visit Monaghan Institute, where the Combilift trainees and apprentices attend for their periods of study. During their morning in the engineering workshops, the nine TY students had the opportunity to try their hand at MIG welding, VR welding, wiring three phase plugs along with creating series and parallel circuits. They were also given demonstrations on running mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic training rigs as well as getting an overview of all the modules covered on the OEM Engineering Traineeship and Apprenticeship programmes.
