Earlier this week, company representatives from across the country gathered at Monaghan Institute for the OEM Engineering Apprenticeship Workplace Mentor training day. This event, organised by Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) and Limerick Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB), aimed to prepare mentors to support their apprentices effectively while in the workplace.

The training covered each module in detail, with OEM Engineering Apprenticeship Tutors explaining the requirements for workplace assessments. The day also emphasised building strong mentoring relationships, setting goals, managing expectations, effective communication, and providing constructive feedback.

Speaking on the day, Programme Manager Anna Marie Woods said “Mentors form an essential component to the OEM Engineering Apprenticeship programme by providing much needed additional support to the apprentice, who are often young people entering the workplace for the first time. Whether this is you first time or fifth time attending, there is always great learning to be had, assessments on the programme develop and evolve along with industry needs and trends so it is very important to be aware of any changes or updates to assessment requirements.”

The OEM Engineering Apprenticeship Mentors come from various professional backgrounds, including company directors, operation managers, training executives, and line managers. The group included both experienced mentors and newcomers. The training day also provided a valuable opportunity for networking and learning from peers, with many business relationships formed over the years. Mentors were given a tour of the Monaghan Institute campus, showcasing its state-of-the-art OEM Engineering workshops and classrooms.

Kevin Bartley, Apprenticeship Manager for LCETB, highlighted the importance of mentoring in helping apprentices bridge the gap between theory and practical application, fostering engagement and knowledge retention. Mr Bartley also emphasised the significance of mentor training in ensuring continuity between the on-the-job and off-the-job phases of the apprenticeship.

The OEM Engineering Apprenticeship is a three-year QQI Level 6 programme consisting of both on-the job and off-the-job blocks and is suitable for those currently employed in engineering companies, school leavers, career switchers and mature applicants wishing to pursue a career as a qualified OEM Engineering Technician.

The programme addresses the skills gap in Irish engineering companies and offers participants a rewarding career path. For employers, this is an excellent opportunity to recruit talented new apprentices who are passionate about their chosen career path in mechanical, robotic and electronic engineering.

On-the-job learning takes place within the company and the learner also attends off-the-job education and training on a block release basis at either the CMETB Monaghan Institute Campus or LCETB Raheen Training Centre in Limerick.
