OEM Engineering Apprenticeship hosts Engineers Ireland STEPS event for primary school children.

As part of Engineers Week, Saturday 2 – Friday 8 March 2024, the OEM Engineering Apprenticeship in partnership with Monaghan Institute and Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, had the pleasure of inviting local 5th and 6th Class students to a Science2Life workshop with the one and only Scientific Sue on Wednesday.

Engineers Week has been created by Engineers Ireland to introduce primary and secondary school children to the diverse world of engineering. This is done by providing practical resources for teachers, such as hands-on activities, a classroom celebration pack and on-demand virtual engineering shows.

The Science2Life workshops bring the fascinating world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) to life through interactive shows and engaging workshops. Their dynamic programmes are designed to captivate audiences, fostering a love for science and engineering among children.

At Wednesday’s workshop, the children had the opportunity to partake in Sue’s magic sessions which centred around the most famous of all magicians Harry potter. These fun, relatable and interactive sessions proved to be a big hit and have hopefully inspired some of our audience to consider a future career in the areas of STEAM.

The Engineers Ireland STEPS Programme is a non-profit outreach programme that promotes interest and awareness in engineering as a future career to students. The programme is funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and industry leaders Arup, the EPA, ESB, Intel and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

The OEM Engineering Apprenticeship is a three-year QQI Level 6 programme consisting of both on-the job and off-the-job blocks and is suitable for those currently employed in engineering companies, school leavers, career switchers and mature applicants wishing to pursue a career as a qualified OEM Engineering Technician. On-the-job learning takes place within the company and the learner also attends off-the-job education and training on a block release basis at either the CMETB Monaghan Institute Campus or LCETB Raheen Training Centre in Limerick.

The OEM Engineering Apprenticeship serves to fill the skills gap faced by Irish engineering companies and offers participants a rewarding and exciting career path from the moment the apprenticeship begins. For employers, this is an excellent opportunity to recruit talented new apprentices who are passionate about their chosen career path in mechanical, robotic and electronic engineering.
